Thanksgiving represents a time of abundance. It’s easy to sit down at the dinner table and eat, drink, and be merry. In America, it’s a time to remember our heritage and when the Native Americans shared their food with the early settlers after their first harvest. But Thanksgiving is also a day to be grateful for the source of all these blessings. Mother Earth provides all that we receive, and she is the one gift that keeps on giving.

Everything at the Thanksgiving table is provided by our magnificent planet. All the plants come from the soil, and all the turkeys, hogs, and other animals that are part of this holiday dinner must survive on the earth’s nutrients. The chairs we sit on are made from metals, wood, or other synthetic substances that are all contributions of planet Earth. Even the table we dine at – whether glass made from sand, or wood from trees, is a gift from the same source. From the tablecloths to the candles, and the flower arrangements, there is simply nothing our heavenly sphere did not provide.

All life is dependent on the planet’s continuing eco-function, yet it’s something most of us rarely think about. Instead, most of us think about what and how much to cook, and how many place settings and chairs we’ll need.

Hopefully, this Thanksgiving, while enjoying the delicious turkey, stuffing, and condiments, we can also be thankful for the source of these blessings.

Our planet is our greatest natural resource, and we should never take it for granted. Despite our human errors such as pollution, erosion, and reckless decisions, it continues to provide everything we need to survive. Even with the invention of hydroponics, recycled products, and other innovations, we still need her water and nutrients to grow food.

In addition to the merriment of being with friends and sharing love and light, this Thanksgiving can be a time to honor the source of survival. Without our planet’s unconditional love and production, we wouldn’t have anything. So, during this special day, let’s remember to be grateful for this beautiful planet and all that she endlessly provides. She is our lifeline, our shelter, and the source of all that we need. We must honor her gifts as well as her limitations. Despite her strength and abundance, like us, she is alive and equally as fragile. She can burn, drown out, be poisoned, or destroyed with violent force. Yet, in her resilience, she continues to give and we can still count on her as our lifeline.

Mother Earth’s abundance is our greatest blessing and one we can remember to thank at the top of our Thanksgiving list. Her unconditional love is around us always and when we treat her as our lifeline, we can be grateful today and every day for her endless gifts. When we’re savoring the sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, or freshly sliced turkey, we can take a moment to say “Thank you for this delicious food, and for continuing to be my one and only source of nutrition. I am grateful.” Then, we have made a truly grateful Thanksgiving for all that the holiday offers and provides.
