Since November includes Veteran’s Day, and is also National Gratitude Month, I’d like to acknowledge our heroes and warriors. Even though our veterans are heroes, there are plenty of other warriors for whom to be grateful. These people not only save lives, but their contributions make other people’s lives better as well.
Even though my stepfather gave most of his adult life to the military, I’ve never served in the military or had a child who served. Whether you approve of war or not, people who enroll in a career to protect others are heroes. Our police officers and armed forces go through extensive training and put their lives on the line for our safety. Some of these warriors didn’t think twice before standing in harm’s way to protect someone or something else. Sometimes, their sacrifices far exceed any expectations – they give a limb or two, their sanity, or even their lives. I’m grateful we can honor them on Veteran’s Day and every other day as well.
People who dare to change the world are also heroes. Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob, the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous had the courage to face their demons and shout out to the whole world, “If we can do it, so can you.” Very few people realize the courage it took for them to crawl out of a self-made hell and turn their shame into serving others.
Then there are people like Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Jesus who also gave their lives in the name of bettering mankind. What did they get for their mission? Yet none of them ever were swayed to turn away from their life’s purpose even when the invisible writing on their tombstone hung like a swinging pendulum over their heads.
We mustn’t forget the silent warriors. These are the people who give and make a difference in their communities and even the world over, who refuse recognition. Their reward is in their heart. They tirelessly work privately behind the scenes, or they anonymously reach deep into their coffers knowing they will never be acknowledged for their contributions. They want no building namesakes, plaques, or statues – just the quiet dignity of knowing they are helping other people to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
Some of the bravest people are the ones who despite severe stressors, illnesses, and horrifying experiences, still get out of bed and show up every day. They might serve smaller numbers but are no less courageous than the others. Without them, there would be no one to stand in their shoes.
I’m grateful for all these heroes. I’d like to see them get more recognition than the people who’ve lost their minds and go on shooting sprees or otherwise destroy life and limb. They tell us good news doesn’t sell. Maybe it’s time to change that narrative. I believe people always step up to what rocks their soul and stirs their inspiration.
I believe there’s a hero in every person. Some people hold back because they’re afraid to shine or worry about what someone else might think. Once we decide to be more grateful for goodness than darkness, more heroes will shine forth. Meanwhile, I’m grateful for those who are on the front lines, making the world a better place because of what they give.
