Getting “hooked” means you took the bait. Sometimes that bait looks incredible on the surface; other times, not so much. At its core, a hook is simply designed to get you to do what someone else wants—no different from getting a fish to bite.

I’m a firm believer in giving things my all and keeping an open mind, but experience has taught me that we must be vigilant. Before you bite, here are three essential steps to protect yourself:

1. Do Your Research First

I recently got hoodwinked by a product that completely failed to deliver, leaving me with zero recourse. Not only did I pay far too much, but I later discovered the same company offered much better options for less money!

Whether you’re evaluating a person, place, or product, there is always a trail. Do your due diligence, gather all the data, and ask yourself honestly: Is this truly good for me? How will this genuinely improve my life? If it’s a product, always check for unfiltered reviews. If transparent feedback isn’t accessible, treat that as an immediate red flag. No one will value you more than you value yourself, so be proactive in protecting your mental health, physical well-being, and hard-earned currency.

2. Don’t Fall for Empty Guarantees
If someone offers a “100% satisfaction guarantee,” buyer beware! Always clarify what that actually means in practice. Anyone can promise the world, but a guarantee doesn’t mean you’ll get good results—in fact, it might guarantee nothing at all! In some cases, a company’s “guarantee” just means they’re confident you’ll get hooked on their product. Don’t let yourself be swayed by polished illusions that look great upfront but bring disappointment and regret in the long run.

3. Ask the Critical Questions Upfront
Before making a commitment, pause and ask yourself:

  • Do I fully understand what I’m signing up for?
  • Am I ignoring obvious warning signs or concerns?
  • How will this enhance my life?
  • What are the potential negative consequences?

If only I had asked myself these questions before lighting my very first cigarette years ago! I could have spared myself high financial cost, severe health risks, and the heavy feeling of having a hook in my mouth dragging me around for years.

Moving Forward
We all make mistakes, and unfortunately, slick marketing or manipulative tactics sometimes win out despite our best efforts. But always remember this; you can unhook yourself at any time. Just recognize upfront that breaking free often takes far more effort than taking the bait in the first place.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself and practice self-forgiveness when you stumble. I truly believe the universe has a way of helping us make the necessary corrections, and as long as we learn from our experiences, things have a way of working out just fine in the end.
