There’s one thing we all have in common: a mom. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate her for giving you the gift of life. Even if you didn’t have an ideal childhood, the fact that you were born means she loved you enough to bring you into the world. Whether you had a fabulous mom or one who fell short of your expectations, it’s not too late to say thank you. You never know how long your mom will be here, so now’s the time to give her the best Mother’s Day ever.
If you plan to acknowledge her, cards and flowers are nice, but words last forever. You can make a list of three or four things your mom did for you. When did she stick up for you? When did she cook your favorite dish? What is your most cherished memory? When did the two of you laugh the hardest? You will be surprised by how happy you will make her when she rekindles those precious moments.

Some people have ideal moms, while others have mothers with limitations. Most moms are a mix of both. Sometimes we hold on to the bad memories instead of the good. Your mom’s shortcomings had nothing to do with you. She either reenacted her own childhood or was in too much pain to function normally. Mother’s Day offers an opportunity to lift the burden of old resentments and focus on the present.

Some of you have lost your moms – either through separation or passing. You can fill some of that empty space by finding a surrogate mom. There are plenty of people who would love to fill a maternal role. Find someone who could be a good surrogate and give her the same praise you would give a biological mom.

None of us was given a handbook on how to raise children. Whatever your mother did or didn’t do, and whether she’s here or not, Mother’s Day is an excellent day to start being a good mom to yourself. Read about good parenting and learn to love yourself the way you always wished she’d loved you. By being the love you want, you will find a spiritual mother right inside your very being.
