Labor Day is one of those holidays that leaves us scratching our heads as we wonder Do I relax or work today? Some of us have a hard time slowing down, while others struggle to get geared up. But Labor Day isn’t about how we work.

While there is some historical controversy regarding the origins of this holiday, the consensus is that it is about celebrating our workers.[1] This holiday was founded to honor those who helped to build our businesses. In effect, the businesses that built our country into a successful nation. Instead of taking those workers for granted, there was a raising of consciousness to acknowledge these people for their valuable contributions.

We can all take a moment to appreciate the laborers who contribute to America’s ongoing growth and economy. Whether they use their hands or their minds, we can’t sustain our growth without them. Artificial Intelligence has its place, but unlike humans, programmed intelligence can’t think and feel and doesn’t care about outcomes.

Labor Day reminds us to appreciate our workers, but it can also trigger us to appreciate them every day. Grateful that stores are open, grateful for mail delivery, grateful for air travel, for transportation, medical workers, construction workers, plumbers, and all the trades that keep us supplied with essential needs.

It’s fun to relax and enjoy social events and cookouts but let us also take a moment to appreciate the work that goes into making them possible. This includes the effort that goes into creating the tables, chairs, cutlery, charcoal, beverages, and the farming that provides the ingredients, as well as many other contributions that are often taken for granted.

Thanks to all the people who make our country a success and make our lives easier. We couldn’t do it without you.
