Over many years of practicing psychotherapy, the main problem I’ve seen among patients is low self-esteem. According to Pacific Mental Health, about 85% of the world’s population struggles with low self-esteem. This is a sad statistic. Low self-esteem leads to depression, lack of motivation, underachievement, and poor relationships. Few people are as ‘bad’ as they believe. Knowing your worth and embracing it is key to overcoming feelings of inferiority.
You are one of a kind – no one else on Earth is exactly like you. That means you have skills and talents that not everyone possesses, including your personality traits. Focusing on and developing these talents can boost your self-confidence. Someone will likely notice your abilities and encourage you to use them. Every successful person has learned to make the most of their natural talents. You can also recognize kindness, helpfulness, and generosity as special traits. Don’t let anything hold you back from feeling good about yourself.
Acceptance – Even though we are surrounded by people who are labeled as perfect in beauty, wealth, and success, everyone has imperfections. Limitations can be an excuse for failure or an opportunity for success. People with disabilities win at the Special Olympics. Winnie Harlow struggles with a severe skin condition and was bullied as a child, but she became a famous model. Nick Vujicic, born without limbs, became a successful international speaker. We can only imagine what their self-esteem was like. Instead of giving in to ridicule and failure, they found their true worth from deep within and showed it. If they can do it, so can you.
Erase Negative Tapes – Are you constantly replaying negative messages about yourself? Did someone call you names or criticize you in a way that left a deep imprint on your mind? Did you fail at something and obsess over why? Replaying negative tapes serves no higher purpose. While it’s good to evaluate negative feedback and use it constructively, it’s never healthy to make it a permanent part of your self-image. If you’re holding on to negative tapes about yourself, imagine taking an eraser and removing them from your mind permanently. Replace those destructive tapes with positive messages such as;[CH1] Like everyone else, I am free to make mistakes. That’s how I learn and grow.
Forgiveness – Some of us find it hard to forgive ourselves for our mistakes. The first step toward forgiveness is to make amends for those mistakes. Apologize and, whenever possible, correct the error. Afterward, we need to let go and recognize that, as humans, we all do regrettable things. When we cling to self-loathing and shame, we stay in darkness. By releasing self-condemnation, we invite in the light so we can move forward and fulfill our life’s purpose of loving and being loved. We can also use those mistakes to gain wisdom and help others.
You are worth much more than you realize. You are a unique and valuable human being whose meaning and purpose far exceed your limitations and mistakes. Make it a daily habit to say three things you like about yourself. You can also acknowledge three other people and something you like about each of them. By strengthening positive affirmations in yourself and others, you will see a garden of good seeds growing that will help you to realize the gifted person that you are.
