Many of us feel uneasy when problems come up. We don’t like the unexpected; it hinders our goals, creates unnecessary stress, and complicates simple tasks. However, problems often represent a better outcome in disguise.

Recently, someone suggested that my blogs are too long. He pointed out that most people no longer read much; they prefer “shorties or videos.” I could say that’s not my problem, or I could acknowledge that maybe he’s right. I might have an issue I haven’t realized before — like people not reading blogs that are too long for their interest. By addressing the situation, I open myself up to solutions and a better way of doing things.
Most problems don’t involve blogs. They usually involve unexpected financial costs, a change of plans, or other unexpected burdens and disappointments. When these situations arise, we often feel disheartened and cave into the problem. But with the right mindset, there are ways to turn every misfortune into a miracle.

#1 Be Creative – Creative thinking counters failure and fosters hope. Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” or “This won’t work,” try thinking creatively. Replace the negative perspective with, “How can I accomplish this?” (for example, seeking advice, asking for help, or being willing to step out of your comfort zone). Instead of saying, “I can’t afford this,” say, “How can I afford this?” (such as saving, finding a better deal of equal value, or taking on extra work). There’s usually a way to achieve our goals when we put our thinking caps on.

#2 Recognize There’s a Better Way– Whenever I experienced disappointment as a child, my mom always said, “Everything always works out for the best.” I usually felt angry when she made this comment, but I found wisdom in her conviction over the years. Not only was she right, but by accepting things I couldn’t change, I allowed something better to happen. This is particularly true in major life decisions such as careers and relationships.

#3 Seek Advice – You’ve probably heard the saying, “Two heads are better than one.” Although this isn’t always the case (think of Albert Einstein), working together can be beneficial. The joint effect of discussions stimulates your thinking and brings new perspectives. Sharing our issues with others isn’t always simple, but neglecting to do so often leads to enduring the problem instead of finding a solution.

I like to think of problems as puzzles and then decide if the puzzle is worth solving. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it’s better to put your energy elsewhere. Regardless, every problem has a solution in disguise. You must decide how important the matter is to you. Regardless, seeing every problem as an opportunity for a solution is also an opportunity for growth. Like a garden, life is worth living as long as we keep growing.
